Heavy Horse Training Courses
We offer tailor-made training courses for all skill levels. From an introductory course for the raw beginner or prospective new entrant to heavy horses, to highly specialized instruction on specific implements and techniques, we can cater for all requirements. We are the longest established training center in the UK, and in conjunction with the Agricultural Training Board [ now LANTRA ] we drew up the course program that became the industry's standard.
Our courses are normally restricted to three or four participants so that there is the maximum "hands-on" experience with a high instructor / pupil ratio. The introductory course, lasting three days, is designed to give an insight into the implications of working a draught horse with a heavy emphasis on the practical realities of selecting the right horse or horses, harness and implements and then acquiring the skills to look after, hitch and drive the animals, as well as operate the machinery. Much care is taken to ensure that each trainee can progress at the rate he or she feels comfortable and confident with. Obviously in such a short time only the most basic principles can be established - to become super-proficient is a lifetime's project! - But once the core skills and knowledge have been acquired, the trainee can develop and hone his own abilities with his own horses. We offer help and advice, as well as refresher courses, as a follow up to all our trainees, if required.
The more specialised courses, such as ploughing or haymaking or logging are again tailor-made to the client's needs, the only restriction being that, obviously, they are run in the appropriate season. However, we do recommend that for these courses, your horsemanship is already well established so that the majority of the training is given with regard to the implements or operations concerned rather than having to start from scratch with basic horse handling techniques.
Courses cost from £ 100 per day, and can be run to suit your timetable; weekends or during the week. Accommodation is available locally. Please ring - evenings are best - to discuss exactly what you need.
